Rerenga

Choreographers & Performers
Jade Whaanga, Lara Jadoo and Jas Ofamo’oni

About the work
An evolving exploration of sense of place through choreography embedding concepts of indigeneity, whakaahua and turangawaewae. Participants gather their own perception about how they are placed in the world. Rerenga is a collaboration choreography created through workshopping, many thanks to dancers for their creative input.

About the Choreographer
I am a New Zealand artist, of Māori, Scottish and English decent. These cultures all influence my personal outlook and approach to creating choreography. I value exploring indigenous worldviews through dance. At the same time, I am very colonized in the way I live. The context of where I am placed in Aotearoa encourages me to connect with my Māori heritage. I find interest in the indigenous concept of whakaahua (coming to form) and the proposal of what it might bring to a contemporary from. Exploring this idea of re-birthing traditional Māori performance as a new form created from indigenous concepts and fused with contemporary devices. The reason I plan to investigate this idea is because I am an artist coming from multiple worlds: historical, ancestral, contemporary, Māori and European. Adapting my choreographic practice under whakaahua allows me to experiment with bringing all aspects of myself into my work.
