When we introduce ourselves to others, a perception of us is created, formed in part by the context. Every label has associated stereotypes, I’ve become hyper-conscious of how harmful these have been to the development of my own identity, and make an effort to see others beyond their labels. When we are introducing or mentioning another person, we often abbreviate them to labels that fit the context. Increased distance from the source results in people becoming abstract connections. This has ramifications around the detriment of constructing authentic relationships, when you’re ‘meeting’ people about whom you have already been provided context.

OTB Dance Collective
-
OTB Dance is a collective of dancers, from a variety of backgrounds, led by choreographic director Lydia Rasmussen. The collective has contributed works to a variety of festivals and events, including this year’s Auckland Fringe festival, and recent music video by New Zealand band ‘The Backchat’. Works by the collective are collaborative choreographies where all dancers contribute movement to the pieces. With a changing cast, this means there is no defined aesthetic that the dances have in common. Lydia is a University of Auckland, Dance Studies graduate who wants to continue to move as long as her body will allow.
