Well? I don’t know
A season of self love
An isolated world, we must learn
Only by accepting
To find our sense of self
Constantly drives never ending confusion
Out of our control.
A dance piece exploring how we might read the state of wellness in ourselves and others.

As a child she lived in my mind. At times she took over. At times she rested. When her wings spread wide, internal wounds where inflicted. When her wings closed tight, emptiness crept in. Never alone with my thoughts, she owned them all. Her constant presence simultaneously reassuring and terrifying.

Show 2 | 13 – 14 September
-
This piece explores the beginning, middle and end of how Revolutions are inevitably a fundamental part of society due to the constant fight for equality and freedom that is never ultimately obtained. We then become stuck in an endless loop of trading one set of rules for another. Have we ever had free will? Are we controlled by the invisible walls of society? We are taught we can improve ourselves and gain control but what happens when we try? Does choice really exist or is it just an illusion? Does the Revolution just bury our minds instead of freeing them?

When we introduce ourselves to others, a perception of us is created, formed in part by the context. Every label has associated stereotypes, I’ve become hyper-conscious of how harmful these have been to the development of my own identity, and make an effort to see others beyond their labels. When we are introducing or mentioning another person, we often abbreviate them to labels that fit the context. Increased distance from the source results in people becoming abstract connections. This has ramifications around the detriment of constructing authentic relationships, when you’re ‘meeting’ people about whom you have already been provided context.

Choreographer Lydia Rasmussen and company (Auckland, NZ)
OTB Dance Collective
-
OTB Dance is a collective of dancers, from a variety of backgrounds, led by choreographic director Lydia Rasmussen. The collective has contributed works to a variety of festivals and events, including this year’s Auckland Fringe festival, and recent music video by New Zealand band ‘The Backchat’. Works by the collective are collaborative choreographies where all dancers contribute movement to the pieces. Lydia is a University of Auckland, Dance Studies graduate who wants to continue to move as long as her body will allow.
