  • About The Piece

    In 1993 Susan Jordan choreographed “Bone of Contention” for the 100th celebration of NZ Women’s Suffrage. This was in Wellington with her professional company, Jordan & Present Co. and received critical acclaim. “Glass Ceilings” starts where “Bone of Contention” ended, white hankies and masks of Kate Sheppard but moves to climbing the corporate ladder. This work differs in some ways – the performers are all seniors aged from 72 to 80, but have issues really changed? Women today are still fighting for pay equity, protection from domestic and sexual violence and climbing corporate ladders in order to shatter glass ceilings.

  • About the Choreographer/Group

    SeniorsDANCE Company is a community dance company for seniors 65+ part of the new wave of Creative Ageing. SeniorsDANCE works on a project-by-project basis with Susan Jordan as AD, choreographer and producer. Jordan has worked as a dance professional in many capacities over the past five decades. With Jordan & Present Co she choreographed 12 major works funded by CNZ and many commissions. She founded Dance Studies at University of Auckland. Established the DANZ Tamaki office and was Regional Manager for 10 years. Jordan has an MA in dance from American University DC and is an elder of the NZ dance community.

  • About The Piece

    Eyes staring, shadows floating, white bird fleeting, like a heavy stretchy filled up balloon, skin grazing burning on steel. An interpolation of multiple meanings, perspectives, behaviours, reactions, and responses between two individuals. Keyframe explores the point of contact between two people meeting for the first time, and the internal conversations, exchanges and the potential conflicts that may occur.

  • About the Choreographer/Group

    Emma Cosgrave is a recent Dance Studies graduate from the University of Auckland, where she is currently completing her Honours postgraduate study, 2018. Emma has worked with a range of choreographers, including but not limited to Sarah Foster-Sproull, Sarah Knox, Taane Mete, Taiaroa Royal and Natalie Maria Clark. Recently, Emma was awarded the DANZ delegate for 2018, and is currently performing as a guest artist with Footnote New Zealand Dance and Guangdong Modern Dance Company choreographed by Sarah Foster-Sproull. Emma is passionate about choreography, performance and research. As a freelancer and emerging performer. Emma is grasping every opportunity that arises to learn, grow and extend herself as an artist.

  • About the Choreographer/Group

    I am Elijah Kennar, and as a young emerging artist, I wish to become well-established in the future. As an ambassador of the arts, the Samoan and South Auckland communities my intentions are to succeed and give back. Not only to encourage these communities but also hope to increase participation and support of the arts. Choreographically I wish to create high quality dance works that are accessible for new dance audience members, but also engaging for the common dance viewers and critics.

  • About The Piece

    Sika Dance Crew is a multicultural group of dancers from all around the world: Chinese, Singaporean, Japanese, European, Kiwi and Samoan. Each member is trained and skilled in different styles of dance and we wished to reflect this melting pot of culture and movement styles within our piece; using hiphop as our foundation. Our aim is to explore how dance can transcend language barriers and combine different dance disciplines into a harmonious fusion of our personal histories, culture and connection with one another as a team.

    Sika Dance Crew was founded in June, 2016 by Sunny Sun and Anna Wang. We started off small as a 7 person crew that loved dance and creating with one another. Over the last 2.5 years we have expanded into 24 members with 8 passionate performance members. We wish to be a fluid crew, that explores new styles and fusions, is open and friendly with other creatives and continues to push boundaries together as a team.

    We are bonding, we are testing our mutual instincts, we are questioning normality. This is in response to our stereotype. This is eye contact, breathing, knowing. This is an introduction, a rivalry, a teamwork. This is nurturing, curiosity, sameness. This is identical, contrasted, anonymous.

  • About the Choreographer/Group

    Dance Plant Collective is an Auckland based contemporary dance collective, founded in 2016 by six Unitec Dance graduates. Their vision is to create politically challenging and transformative performance work grounded in an ecological framework, and their desires lie in collaboration and nurturing community. Dance Plant have so far developed and performed three full-length works, another highlight being their involvement in multidisciplinary collaborations during their time as artist residents at Studio One Toi Tū. Brittany Kohler and Natasha Kohler are two members of Dance Plant, who trained in and studied dance together before working together as part of this collective.

    This piece is a reflection on life as a constant state of in-between. Life and death. Earth and sky. In-breath and out-breath. It echoes all the spaces ever encountered; shows the transition between them; and highlights that eventually, our response to being transient is to grow. This is a contemplation of human experience.

    Emily Moffat is an emerging artist who is interested in working with a hybrid of art forms. A graduate of the University of Auckland Dance Studies Program, Emily is currently training at React Circus Studio under their Rise Mentorship and aims to explore the blending of circus and dance. Emily often considers her work to be experimental, and enjoys working in a collaborative way.

    Sofia McIntyre is a 2011 graduate of UNITEC’s Performing and Screen Arts degree majoring in Contemporary Dance. She is a regular dancer with Mary-Jane O’Reilly’s neo-burlesque show ‘In Flagrante’, which has seen her perform in the 2013 Edinburgh Fringe and numerous shows both in New Zealand and overseas. Sofia has danced and worked collaboratively with choreographers since leaving UNITEC but this is her first time creating something solo.
