  • About the Choreographer/Group

    Helene Burgstaller studied contemporary dance at Unitec. Since then she’s been working as a freelance dancer and choreographer. She dances with Waikato Contemporary Dance Projects Trust and Touch Compass Dance Company. She is a guest teacher at University of Waikato and at local schools. Helene lives in Paeroa where she runs a dance school and teaches creative contemporary classes to both kids and adults.

    Salt is a small collective of dancers, aerialists and ‘imaginers’ who are passionate about movement, creativity and sharing stories in fun and fresh ways.   • About the Choreographer/Group
    Jas Ofamo’oni is of European/Tongan heritage. She recently graduated her Undergraduate in a Bachelor of Dance Studies at the University of Auckland. She is currently studying at the University of Auckland towards her Honours in Dance Studies. This is Jas’ first year entering Short and Sweet festival as a choreographer, as she has been involved as a performer in previous years. Her choreographic interests surround bringing concepts to life that work with the physical and spiritual aspects of the human body, as well as adding aesthetic layers to choreographic movement to enhance an audience’s experience.

    When the lyrics of a country song meets the grace and beauty of Polynesian dance from the Cook Islands, Hawaii and Tahiti, the beauty in sadness manifests. Feelings of nostalgia and melancholy knows no boundaries amongst women and we hope that people of different backgrounds begin to appreciate the truthful meaning of ‘our’ dances.

  • About the Choreographer/Group
    Tepaeru-Ariki was born and raised on the island of Aitutaki (Cook Is.) and has Cook Islands Maori, Tahitian Maori, Spanish and English ancestry. She has been a ‘tamure’ dancer from a very young age and continued since moving to Aotearoa. Tepaeru-Ariki has danced and choreographed national and international touring groups. She is a long standing member Auckland based Cook Islands dance group, Anuanua Dance Troupe and the founder of Tiare Nui Dance Collective. Tepaeru-Ariki is currently in her fifth year of study towards a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Auckland.

    Jess Crompton is a dancer studying a Bachelor of Performing Arts at Manukau Institute of Technology. She finds dance to be one of the truest forms of emotional expression and a natural response to a good song. Her aim in both her performance and choreography is to invite the audience into an emotional experience as if they too had lived the given concept.

Generation Y; torn between finding freedom in their own dreams, and seeking acceptance within the realms of society. She is you, I, her, him, us. She is dark, light, a friend, a foe. But she is nothing, because nothing is everything. And everything is everywhere and has existed always. A turmoil of external and internal questions, can she find balance? More importantly, can we?
