  • Bio of Choreographer/Group

    Currently in last semester of Dance Studies at the University of Auckland.
    This year I wish to explore what else I have to offer as a dance practitioner, focusing on choreography. As a dancer, I tend to favour dances that require high physicality, and this can also be evident in choreography.Mea Tau performed by Leighton Lee Rangi, Taitanyk Toniu, Sione Fataua and Villa Junior Lemanu was the first piece for this year.

    Obsess will be different as I explore what it would be like to choreograph and perform. I am working in collaboration with a good friend of mine, Villa Lemanu.

    The world can be very confusing when you have voices and thoughts in your head that aren’t yours. No matter how ridiculous what they are saying may seem to others, at times it can be so difficult to not believe them or engage with them. This piece is an expression of that craziness and confusion. The experience of something so real, yet seemingly imagined to others.

    Rochelle has been working as a circus performer with The Dust Palace for just over 3 years, performing various aerial and ground based acts for Corporate events as well as Circus theatre shows.
    Last year at Short+Sweet Dance, Rochelle won the Wallace Foundation Exceptional Artistry Award.

    DreamCatchers WorldWide is an Auckland based Youth Arts Charity that strives to provide authentic training in Hip Hop, Street Dance styles and more and with their first Hip Hop theatre piece, Hip Hop Hysteria – Exploring Stereotypes aims to provide a narrative that reflects the issues and struggles of dierent groups in contemporary society, briefly exploring the idea of ‘identity’, ‘stereotyping’ and ‘perception’.

    Fusing Hip Hop, Street and Cultural dance we take a look at social and cultural concerns from dierent perspectives with a ‘short and sweet’ approach. Using a mixture of community and professional dancers across a range of dance styles, this piece oers a unique presentation to a future full length production.

  • About the Choreographer/Group

    Hailing from London, England, Jazmine Cox, choreographer and director of DreamCatchers WorldWide, is a UK Street Dance champion, HHI Gold medalist, IDO Hip Hop Champion, one of the founding members of Plague UK, founder of House Dance NZ, Foreign Exchange NZ and an English Literature BA Hons graduate. Having trained across many styles including Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Rock n Roll, Latin American, Jive and more…Jazmine found her forte as a performer, choreographer and teacher in Hip Hop and Street Dance styles and has trained and performed with some of the best dancers and artists in the world. She has also quickly made a name for herself here in NZ with credits including ‘Born To Dance’, Miss World NZ, Miss Universe NZ, Air NZ Safety Video, HHI/SDNZ Judge, Ryan Enzed, Warehouse, Rainbows End and more. She also works closely with Auckland Council to create opportunities and platforms for young Kiwis.
